Wellness Works!

Cancer Related

In May, the American Heart Association and Susan B. Komen hold their annual events.

Susan B. Komen's Race for the Cure draws thousands of families each year in support of cancer victims and survivors.  Two years ago, the African American Breast Cancer Alliance (AABCA) became a partner and you you can donate and participate in the events and designate your contributions the AABCA.  FMBC has several families that participate and if you are interested in being a part of the morning walk, see Sister Beverly or Sister Victoria.

Early detection of cancer increases longevity.

The American Heart Association sponsors a Heart Walk for at risk families and lost ones.  Last year, their Heart Walk started downtown and the Target Center and pledges were taken by Brother Fred Estes for Carmen Lynell Smith Wilson. This year, Dr. Juanita Benton, FMBC member and Psychologist at North Point Health Center, has signed on for the 5-10k walk.  If you are interested in walking or donating, see Sister Beverly.

Blunt the effect of Salt in your body

It might be surprising that a sweet, juicy orange has the power to control the negative effects of sodium in your body, but it's true: Oranges are rich in potassium, the mineral that helps regulate sodium. The benefit: An orange a day may help lower your blood pressure, reduce the risk of stroke, and help keep your heart healthy and strong. Yes, it is simple as that.

There's something you should know about Alka-Seltzer, sodium and your blood pressure … "Plop, Plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is" But Alka-Seltzer Effervescent has a high sodium content and could increase your blood pressure. If you have stomach trouble, consider peppermint oil instead, or peppermint mints. Remember check labels!

Enjoy a Healthy Life!

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death for ALL Americans - men and women. Next is Prostate Cancer for men and Breast Cancer for women. Then there is the chronic disease of Diabetes, related to heart and kidney diseases.

Recently, Alzheimer’s researchers have cited that African Americans will suffer with ALZ/Memory loss two times more than other Americans. Risk factors for all include: stress, heredity, physical inactivity, obesity, poor diet and oral hygiene, and the BIG ONE — Hypertension! Let’s Get OUR WALK BY FAITH ON!!!! Men/Youth basketball league - FMBC can win!

It’s time again for the StairStep MOVING by FAITH Olympics - Champion recognition for Church competitions - see Sister Propes for more information.

Seniors 65+

A new program is being offered to Seniors 65+ living in the community or senior residences who are eligible for Medical Assistance and enrolled in Medicare Part A/B. In addition there is a partner program called Minnesota Senior Options that will help you understand how their care coordinator program works. There is so much learning needed to maintain health if you are on Medical assistance and enrolled in Medicare. An Open House Workshop is planned in April – see Beverly Propes/ FMBC Health Ministry for more information.
